Painting in the heart of Canowindra

My studio, gallery and home are tucked into the historic main street of Canowindra, in the Central West of New South Wales.

Canowindra is a small country town surrounded by the rich lucerne flats of the Lachlan Valley, with a thriving arts community, some very good wineries and the annual Canowindra Balloon Festival bringing a little colour to the skies above town.

The main street has an unusual character of its own. With its historic shopfronts, verandahs and wide streetscape, it has featured in film and television and can sometimes feel more like the set of an old Western than a country town in Central West NSW.

I’ve painted the streets of Canowindra many times, and still find something new to paint here. The changing light, old buildings and everyday life of the town are a constant source of inspiration.

The old Union Bank- Canowindra

David Isbester Gallery occupies one of Canowindra’s historic buildings, originally built around 1910 as the Union Bank of Australia.

Remarkably, the original bank counter has survived through the building’s many incarnations. Over the years this building has been home to a stock and station agent, a doctor’s surgery and even a women’s designer clothing outlet.

These days, the building has returned to something a little closer to its artistic roots. It is both my gallery and working studio, where I paint, teach workshops and exhibit my original oil paintings, plein air studies and limited editions.

It’s also home, so there is a good chance that if you visit, you’ll find me somewhere amongst the paintings, brushes and a work in progress.

Come and have a look

David Isbester Gallery is open weekends, 10am–4pm, unless I’m away painting.

If you’re visiting Canowindra, I’d love you to drop in and have a look around. You can find the gallery in the heart of the historic main street.
