Hearts and Thoughts (30"x 24")
Description: Hearts and Thoughts is a portrait of an old store in the historic heart of Carcoar, a place that seems to have been gently suspended in time. The two-storey building, with accommodation above and its weathered veranda below, carries the character of more than a century of country life. Even the slightly under-engineered struts supporting the awning have somehow endured, doing their job year after year.
The faded lettering of Enterprise Stores and Emporium hints at another era, while the weathered road and footpath reinforce the feeling that little has changed. For me, the building carries a more personal story. I came to know Colleen, who ran the shop for many years, and today the shop remains almost exactly as she left it when she retired.
Painted on an overcast day in an impressionistic style, Hearts and Thoughts is a quiet reflection on the people and stories that become part of a place. Its title is a gentle nod to the Pearl Jam song Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town—a song that captures something of the melancholy, memory and enduring connection I feel when looking at this little corner of Carcoar.
