Five O'Clock Shadow (18"x 18")
Description: Five O’Clock Shadow captures the entrance to the old railway tunnel near Carcoar Station, built in 1886 and now a quiet monument to another era. The afternoon sun casts a long diagonal shadow across the steep hillside, while the high horizon and brooding cloudscape create a strong, almost theatrical sense of time passing.
Below, rusty disused rails rest on crumbling sleepers, disappearing towards the tunnel, while two strangely contrasting trees stand sentinel against the sky. These simple elements—the shadow, the tracks, the trees and the weathered landscape—come together to tell the story of an afternoon and a railway that has long since fallen silent.
Painted in an impressionistic style, Five O’Clock Shadow is as much about the atmosphere of the place as its history: the fading light settling across a landscape filled with reminders of times bygone.
