Victorian Artist Society 9×5 Exhibition

So in recent times I have decided to participate in a few different events and one of these is the Victorian Artist’s Society 9×5 Exhibition. Earlier in the year, I met Lucy from the VAS Gallery. By chance she had wandered into my gallery in Canowindra. We got talking and so she introduced me to an Exhibition coming up inspired by the first Australian impressionist exhibition. It sounded right up my alley and I decided to participate.

I ordered 4 x 9″by 5″ panels from VAS online. They soon arrived. I excitedly primed them ready to paint on, and then carried them around with me painting for a while. I had a few ideas and then the opportunities came along to put these paintings down in paint. I really enjoyed the process and it became a very productive few weeks.

During this time I had also started using new paints from Langridge. Wow! These new colours inspired me so much. Suddenly mixing the colour became intuitive and my confidence in my ability grew exponentially . I think previously I was trying to push colours to a place they wouldn’t go. Very frustrating. So in some ways these 9 by 5 paintings were experimental, full of joy and a rekindled love for painting. Thanks to Langridge artist colours, I am enjoying painting so much more.

I have only recently realised that my plein air paintings are actually impressionist paintings. I’d always say that I painted light and if I had to explain that more I’d say, you know…like a Viking. But now its clear to me that I do paint light…like an impressionist. And this realisation inspired me greatly and I felt very comfortable working on these for this exhibition. As you would probably guess, the original Heidelberg School painters have influenced me from a very young age.

These are the 4 panels that I sent off.

I have just been notified that they have all been accepted in the VAS 9×5 exhibition 2024 and they are currently on display there. Stay tuned, I may have even better news.

I am very pleased to announce that I was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’.
